Discussion: Books Are Cats
I have a mountain of books waiting to be read. Many of them have excellent reviews and I'm looking forward to them. Why, then, do I continue to buy other books and pick up books at the library, postponing the reading of titles I'm reasonably certain to like?![]() |

Until I read the book, it has a 50/50 shot of being amazing or horrible. Thus, it is both amazing AND horrible until I read it. What if I crack the spine and it's DOA? That would be horribly disappointing. As long as I don't read it, the possibility of awesomeness remains.
The other, more probable, explanation is that I am a lazy, TV-watching book buying addict. ;)
Anyone else out there have a similar problem, putting off reading the books you hope to love?

I just buy books faster than I can read them. But I am fairly good at prioritizing what needs to be read first, so I do eventually get to all of those awesome (and not so awesome) books. ;) Reading challenges go a long way towards making me stay true to my goals.
ReplyDeleteChallenges/deadlines are definitely helpful. And maybe breaking down the one big pile into smaller ones. :)
DeleteHaha, yes, I definitely have had this problem where I like the anticipation before reading the book so much that I keep putting it off. I more have the problem these days of just wanting to read everything at once which is sadly not possible :(
ReplyDeleteTrue...just not enough hours in a day to read everything. Even fewer once you've finished work and decompressing after work and eating and sleeping and stuff... Any chance we could ditch those things? :)
DeleteI can't stop buying and acquiring books and yes sometimes I'm loathe to read them because I worry they'll be bad. Or I "save" them for when I need a good pick me up read thinking that will be the one and then never GET to it
ReplyDeleteExactly! It's a problem. That, or it's just the usual breed of procrastination and we'll worry about fixing it tomorrow. ;)
DeleteLOL! I don't have this problem, I buy a book I'm excited to read it instantly goes on my to read pile. I've been trying not to buy faster than I read. I'm going on a book buying freeze next month, lol.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had myself on a buying freeze last month. Though I'm finding I can kill most impulse buys if I stop and take two seconds to consider all the books on my shelf that need reading. So everyone goes to the TBR pile. It's just a really, really big pile. :)
DeleteIn the past week I bought 64 books... for $52.. from a book fair...
ReplyDeleteSo yes, I have this problem... badly!
It's not a problem...it's a...a...an investment! Yeah, that. ;)
DeleteI have a few authors that I am so hyped up with expectations that I truly do fear the end result. Lucky for me, most of them never end up being a dead cat.
ReplyDeleteThat's good news! I remember one book earlier this year- I had read so many good reviews, I snatched it the second it hit the library and immediately started. It turned out to be a 2 star for me. :( And now I procrastin--ahem, I mean live in fear. :)
