Top 10 "Hard" Books

A weekly meme by The Broke and the Bookish

The topic is technically "Top 10 Books That Were Hard For Me To Read (because difficulty of book, subject matter, because it was cringe worthy-- however you want to interpret)." I decided to pick ten books that were "hard" for me to read in that they took FOREVER. It wasn't necessarily the length of the books, but they were all part of school curriculum. Which means they were bogged down by tedious assignments and essays. Which made them boring and/or a pain to read. :P

I might have liked some of these more, like Jane Eyre and Animal Farm, if I didn't have to do so much work on them. Tracking down quotes and filling out packets tends to leave a sour aftertaste.

That's it for this round of 10! Thanks for stopping by and check back in tomorrow for this week's Updates! In which I get ready for Florida. :)

  1. Ugh, "school" books...aka classics. I feel you, girl. I haven't read any of those, but I'm sure I'd feel the same!

    1. Yep, it's really a shame. I might have liked some of them without the school factor...which makes it unsurprising that so many kids avoid reading. The negative connotations form in the classroom, and if your family doesn't do reading for fun outside school, you'll probably steer clear of books. :(

  2. I enjoyed Animal Farm. Brave New World I enjoyed for about half the book but really got nothing out of the ending.

    1. Animal Farm was okay...until the billionth worksheet. Brave New World...I got why it was a "classic," but I didn't enjoy it, less so when I had to pick out quotes and write lengthy analyses on each. AKA, I wrote a ton of drivel off the top of my head, but it sounded good. ;)

    2. Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how glad I am to see ENDER'S GAME on that list!! I thought I was all alone in finding that book so boring!!

    3. I'm not sure I would have liked it anyway, but the schoolwork definitely didn't endear it to me.

  3. I liked Ender's Game! The movie? No way. I read a lot of these on my own (Jane Eyre, Animal Farm) and they were still pretty hard to slog through.

    1. Ender's Game and I didn't click, and I still haven't seen the movie all the way through. I know classics can be a slog anyway because of the very different writing styles, which makes me wonder why schools don't incorporate more recent publications along with "classic literature."
