Art It Up! - Elsa (DA)

Art It Up! is a weekly feature hosted by Tabitha @ Not Yet Read.

Forget an art series (because that's just not happening with my current art schedule (or lack thereof)), but I did a little fiddling around with some simple digital art the other day. It's basically taking a silhouette and splatter brushing it to death. :)

Ta-da! Meet digital art Elsa! I've seen other people do similar work, but with really pretty watercolor brushes (and a better sense of the color wheel), but this was a fun little exercise. I used Pixlr's free online editor, which only has so many options, but I kind of like the results I got with this set of brushes. Not sure I remember how to replicate it though... *fail* Which one do you guys like better? I'm leaning toward the blues, but the pink version is more dynamic.

If anyone's interested in giving it a shot, find a photo of a character, preferably with no or little background (so it's easy to get rid of), select pixels, create a new layer and splatter-brush away! I used multiple layers for the different brush colors so it was easy to kill anything that wasn't working or adjust the opacity to tone down certain shades.

And there you have it! Easy enough any doodler can give it a try and have splattery, new artwork for a kid's room in half an hour. One last word of advice: pick a base piece with a readily recognizable character/pose. :)

  1. The first one seems most like 'Elsa'. I really like these! Sigh, yes, my household is a 'Frozen' household. Instead of letting it drive me bonkers I am trying to embrace it and just 'Let it goooooo, let it gooo!'

    1. Haha, yes! It's a catchy song, though I'm kind of ready to not hear it for a long while. Into the Disney vault you go! But it is a distinctive pose and color palette, so Elsa was useful for the art experimenting. :)

  2. I like the blue one best!

Also, I had no idea that was supposed to be Elsa until you mentioned it. Though, that's most likely because I still haven't seen Frozen. I plan to! I just haven't actually done it yet... *laughs* The blue one reminds me a bit of the Blue Fairy in Pinocchio. I have no idea why...

    1. You've missed out on all the Frozen madness?! Lucky! ;) But yeah, it's worth seeing once, but no rush. In fact, it might be better watched once the hype has died down. The Blue Fairy did have those flowy robe things too, right? Although she was more of a pastel blue...which could look cool. I wonder if a cutout of her would be recognizable enough.
