Random Amusement: The Cute Edition

Cutesy merchandise is nothing new. Vendors have been selling dollies and teddy bears and other items with visual appeal (and sometimes severely distorted proportions) for forever. Does anyone remember the good old days of Beanie Babies, Furby and trolls? And today, it's even kind of cool for adults to collect this stuff! (Okay, not exactly, but close enough...as long as you don't have a whole basement full of it.)

So, here's a quick roundup of some of the latest "cute" sensations that caught my eye!
(Disclaimer: I don't own, "endorse" or recommend any of these products. I just thought they looked cool. All photos link to product pages.)

Funko POP!:

I think I first saw these guys in B&N and, while I don't love most of the "people" figures, they make some cute small creatures. And apparently Funko recently started up a new line called "Dorbz," which are rounder, cuter, and have everyone smiling.

Disney's Tsum Tsums:

I like the illustrations (of just the faces) way better than the plushes (fat gerbils about to keel over), but the design style reminds me too much of a baby's nursery to ever get one. Still, the simplified designs might be ripe for a DIY art project. >.>

Baby Groot Crochet Pattern:

And, because I'm a cheapskate, here's a free pattern I found if you'd like to crochet your own Baby Groot--who made it into the cute list, not once, but twice. :) (Note: I haven't tried this pattern, but it looks like it's only two or three different stitches. Let me know if it's difficult if you make one!)

What do you think? Do you like any of these brands, or do you long for the McDonald's toys of old? Do you have any favorite cute dolls or figurines you keep around?

  1. I think I've seen the Funko POP in Elsa and Anna styles. The Dorbz do look even cuter. Wasn't pillow pets a thing recently? That was a weird craze. I miss the Tomagotchi phase. Can we bring those back? ?

    1. I've seen the pillow pets ad on TV, but I don't know if they ever caught on. Tomagotchi! I had one back in elementary school, but I think it died pretty quickly. I feel like I read about them having an online game version now.

    2. Online would be fun, just to relive the 'glory' days (ha!). But I wonder if they have an app....hmmm...

    1. Hasten thee to BN! Or, you know, BN.com to make sure it's in stock. ;)

  4. I have a pretty big collection of Funko Pops, because I devour pop culture like it's going out of fashion, haha. My favourite may be my dancing baby Groot (which you featured!) because he's just too darn cute. But I am also really partial to my Bambi one, but that's probably because I am more than a little obsessed with Bambi XD

Those Disney things look so cute! I don't know if I would buy one, though. I know they recently released itty bittys, and they were really cute plushies, which I also bought quite a few of.

I wish I could sew because I'd love a handmade Groot!

    1. Yes, whoever came up with dancing baby Groot was a merchandising genius. :) Itty bittys? I don't think I've seen them around, but I'll take a look. After my last sewing project, I'm in no rush to attack something with fewer straight lines, but I'd love to see it if you make one!
