Top 10 Books on My YA Historical Fantasy 101 Syllabus

I took some interesting classes back in college, although not too many literature courses--that was more an English major thing. Writing Arts tied in more closely with the Communications and Journalism departments. Still, there was some interesting reading in there, including a class on female detectives in literature where I first learned about the original Nancy Drew. Fun stuff. :)

Anyway, if I were teaching a class, these 10 would be required reading on my syllabus.

YA Historical Fantasy 101

  1. Ooh, I do love historical fantasy! I've read a few of these books, and definitely want to red Robin LaFevers series as well as Rebel Mechanics. There are some books here that I've never even heard of, so going to go check them out. Great list!

    1. I enjoyed both Rebel Mechanics and Dark Triumph. I haven't read the other two books in the His Fair Assassin trilogy, but I hear those are good, too. Thank you!

  2. Eek - I haven't read any of these, although I do own Born of Illusion and Jackaby.

A couple of recent fantasy reads I highly recommend (although I don't know if they qualify as historical because they are SO fantasy-filled; but they "feel" old) are: Uprooted, The Shattered Sea series by Joe Abercrombie, and The Storyspinner.

    1. Born of Illusion was decent, though I did not hear good things about its sequel. I definitely recommend Jackaby and Beastly Bones. I enjoyed both. :)

I almost put Uprooted on this list! And The Storyspinner is on my TBR list. Great suggestions!

  3. I haven't read any of these either! Historical fantasy is apparently not a big reading category for me...but it SHOULD be because I love both historical and fantasy books! Why haven't I mashed them together more frequently??

    1. I wouldn't have thought it was a big category for me, but I wanted to do something more specific than just fantasy, and it jumped out while looking through the Goodreads list. Let me know if you try any of these. :)
