Winter by Marissa Meyer (3 stars)

I've finally completed the Lunar Chronicles! I still wish they'd released Winter when first planned and then Fairest, but I can see why they changed the schedule.

Heads up: though I'll try not to spoil anything in the final book, there may be spoilers for the rest of the series in the synopsis and/or review. If you're still mid-series, feel free to check out my reviews of Cinder, Cress and Fairest instead. :)

Winter by Marissa Meyer
Series: Lunar Chronicles #4
Genres: YA, SFF

Final Rating: 3 stars
Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

Can Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter defeat Levana and find their happily ever afters?

Overall, I enjoyed Winter and, while Cinder is still my favorite of the four, I will happily recommend the whole series to fans of fairy tale retellings and/or sci-fi/fantasy.

Though I liked the story and was generally happy with the way it wrapped up the series, there were a few things for which I could not effectively suspend disbelief. Without going into any details, I would not let these people plan my revolution. :P

I also had a sense that Winter went for too much and could have been split into two books. At the same time, it had a couple of slow spots and could have been tightened up into a smaller page count.

On the whole though, happiness. :)

  1. Yea, there was so much going on in this book. I'm not ready to let go of this series yet though. I've already pre-ordered "Stars Above" :)

    1. Haha, yeah, I'll probably have to pick up "Stars Above" at some point, too. :)

  2. I liked Cinder so much! Sadly, I have not been able to keep up with this series! I remember reading Cinder, loving it, and then seeing in the back of the book how there would be four books in the series total (and now five) - that was just waaaaaay too long for me! But I really want to read the entire series, so I'll be binge-reading the books at some point. I'm glad you didn't completely dislike this one, Kel! :D

    Lovely review!

    1. Thank you! Haha, yeah, definitely still read the series when you get a chance! I think I can most liken this to Avengers Age of Ultron: it's entertaining and enjoyable, but the How It Should Have Ended would be EPIC.

  3. Sorry this wasn't as great as it could have been :(
On another note, I really need to start reading this series! I feel like I'm the only bookworm who hasn't! Lol.
Have a lovely week ahead :)

    1. Haha, no worries Amy! I suppose we could say that of most books (or at least all those under 4 or 5 stars). ;)

But yes, you should definitely try the Lunar Chronicles! New Year's resolution! :D
