Journal Success and Successful Book Trades

Good news: I got the results from the law journal write-on competition, and I'm in! I was invited to join one of, if not the, most prestigious journals at my school. Which is awesome! And will be a TON of work. Starting now. *sobs uncontrollably*

On the bright side, my first three Twitter #booksfortrade deals went through without a hitch!

I'm super happy with my trades! The only problem: making time to read all these books and more before school starts again. ;)

I finished The Aeronaut's Windlass and, while the ending was good, that slow middle really killed it for me. So no full review, but here's the short version:
Good beginning: fun characters, an air battle and a surprise attack.

Sloooow middle: left the two interesting MC's sitting around waiting and focused in on Bridget (who worked much better in scenes with the other MC's and didn't have any serious character development until page 430). I almost DNF'd.

Good end: the action comes back in full force, the interesting MC's are once again in the thick of things and doing stuff.

I may or may not continue the series. I'm interested to see where Gwen's character goes, and I think Captain Grimm has some fun adventures ahead. I'm not interested in more POV chapters from Bridget and Rowl. They work nicely in group scenes, but their narrative voices didn't work well for me.
Gotta go and get some sleep for the busy week ahead: I have Lesson #2 with my computer tutoring student, I got my first journal source gathering assignment and I'm running the slides at VBS.

How are your summers going? Read any good books lately?

  1. CONGRATS ON THE INVITES!!! That is so cool! Hopefully the work involved will be worth it. =) Great trades there! I really liked all four of those books, such good choices. I got a copy of the Butcher book but gave it to my sister's boyfriend... he liked it! Better him than me, it's not my thing. :D

Hope your month is going well so far! See you TOMORROW. =)

Alyssa @ The Eater of Books!

    1. They say law journal is a major resume booster, so it should be worth better. I had higher hopes for The Aeronaut's Windlass and would have liked it a lot if not for that middle. But it had hardly any romance, so probably not an Alyssa read. ;) See you TODAY. :D

  2. There's just never enough time to get to all the books. Hope you love A Gathering of Shadows. It's one of my fave books of the year!

    1. Indeed, but especially during the school year--then it's near impossible. I have high hopes for AGoS based on all the good things I've heard. Glad to hear you loved it, too!
