I loved Beauty and the Beast as a kid! It had a bookworm, magic, fantastic music and beautiful animation.

I watched it again recently and still loved it, despite the Stockholm syndrome issues.

I finally saw the new live-action Beauty and the Beast yesterday. I thought it was really entertaining! Best part of the film, hands down: Gaston. He was absolutely brilliant.

I think the new movie did a great job of showing why reading was so important to Belle and made her something of an outcast in that time period. The ensemble musical numbers were great. The Beast grew on me, and he had some great silly moments.

I was less thrilled with LeFou. Don't get me wrong. I think Josh Gad did a great job and had some awesome one-liners, but giving him a conscience created some discord in the narrative. Like, Gaston was so bad, it didn't make sense why LeFou or anyone with a conscience stuck with him...especially as things escalated. It made a lot more sense when he was a simple sycophant who just wanted to be popular.

Little issues aside, I'm glad I saw the new version and it was a lot of fun!

If you need another dose of Beauty and the Beast to tide you over until the Blu-ray/DVD release, here are a few B&B retellings to check out!

Beauty is one of my all-time favorite fairy tale retellings. Hunted was a little less successful for me, but it has more action. Uprooted isn't exactly a B&B retelling, but it definitely has that fairy tale feel. Cruel Beauty is all about the romance; I didn't love it, but tons of people do. :)

What did you think of the new movie? Have you read any other good B&B retellings?

  1. It is funny, at first I didn't see Uprooted as a retelling but it kind of is. Not sure how I missed it.

    'OH WHAT A GUY......GAAAAASTOOOONNNNN!'

    1. I think of Uprooted as more of an original tale, but it has a few B&B elements.

      LOVE that song!

  2. Gaston easily steals the show for me, so I'm happy to hear that trend continues with the new movie. I haven't seen it yet - waiting for the hype to die a bit so I don't go in with outrageous expectations haha

    1. That's not a bad way to go! With the added bonus of empty theaters so you don't have to worry about people getting up in the middle and walking in front of you. >.> And yes, Gaston! XD

  3. Gaston!!! <3 I actually wasn't a huge B & B fan growing up, but I loved this movie!!

I didn't really care for Cruel Beauty. But I'm looking forward to reading Uprooted shortly!

    1. I wonder what it'll be like watching the original B&B now that I've seen this one? I shall have to find out. Movie night! :) I hope you like Uprooted! I really enjoyed it.
