Merry Christmas and a Happy Book Year!

Merry Christmas, everyone! It's been a long road to December 25th, but we made it.

Since I last posted, I've finished finals, read a few books, checked out some Philly holiday traditions, and put in extra hours at work (because money).

I'm not going to lie. Finals were rough this semester. I wound up trying to teach myself and a classmate a whole course in a week--after my first exam, but before my last paper. I can't tell you how glad I am it's over.

I squeezed in a few more books during and after finals. I've mentioned a number of times how much I love Anne Bishop's The Others series, right? Well, I happened upon an omnibus paperback of her older Black Jewels trilogy at a library sale and picked it up.

I read all three quickly, but I can't say I enjoyed any of them. It takes place in a seriously messed up world with sexual violence galore, and the story remains focused on a couple of emo super special snowflakes while showing next to nothing of the more interesting side characters. If you haven't read any Anne Bishop, I recommend skipping these and trying The Others series instead. If you've already read The Others and want more . . . a lot of people seem to like the Black Jewels, so maybe you will? But if you can't read sexual violence stuff (including some truly awful characters and their dealings with children), definitely stay away.

On a happier note, I read Vengeance Road, which my super awesome OTSP secret sister Morgan sent, and really liked it! It has that spaghetti western vibe (and dialect), disputed gold, a stubborn-as-a-mule protagonist, and a teensy bit of romance properly playing second fiddle to revenge and, you know, people shooting at them.

In between studying and work, I finally checked out some of Philadelphia's holiday events, mostly light shows.

I've lived in South Jersey for 13 years and had somehow never gone to any of this stuff. Go figure.

And I have to note the incredible package my TBTBSanta sent!

This is my second year participating, and it was a blast once again. Can't wait to do it again next year!

What else have I forgotten? Um, I leave for Scotland in a little over a week, and I'm trying to squeeze in as much time at work as I can before that (and read a few more books). I'll do a full breakdown of this year's reading soon.

Besides that, a very merry Christmas to you all!

  1. Oooh Scotland, consider me jealous :) I hope you have an amazing time! And yay for being done with finals, I'm glad they're behind you. I will definitely skip that series and just read The Others, my goodness, that sounds BAD. I went to college outside of Philly, and still leave only about 2 hours away, and I have never been to any of that stuff either- I am glad you got to go, it looks really fun! And thanks for sharing the lovely pictures!! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

    1. Thank you, Shannon! Yes, you should definitely go straight to The Others. The Philly holiday stuff was pretty cool. although the walking around was a little cold. Maybe you can see it next year!

  2. I love that you got to fit in so many local traditions this year!! I feel like it always happens that way, you figure the local stuff will always be there and somehow you never go... at least that's what I seem to do! I'm sorry finals were so rough but I'm really glad that you're done! One more semester, woot!! Oh I'm SO glad you enjoyed Vengeance Road!! I got the sequel for Christmas and I can't wait to read it :) Such a perfect TBTBSanta package. Have the most AMAZING time in Scotland!!!! I have a feeling my letter won't make it before you leave but it will be there waiting for you when you get back. Can't wait to see pictures and hear everything!! Happy New Year <3

    1. I do the same thing! I wonder if that also explains all the unread books on my shelves...hmm. Thank you again for the brilliant book choice! Happy New Year, Morgan!
